Woman ends marriage because husband is gay, Says ‘Can’t trust any man again’

YEMISI OLUSINA
Labijo, a community in Orimerun area of Ogun State were thrown into confusion when a couple whose relationship had  been hallowed for being exceptional for more than a decade suddenly went their separate ways some weeks ago.
” I was personally horrified when I later found out that the man was the one sent packing and not the woman as such cases usually are,” a man who lived close to the couple said.
” They both attended the same church as I and I learnt all attempts to settle the feud between the couples by the church also failed,” chipped in a petty trader close the their residence.
But the truth of the matter was brought to the open by a close associate of the woman who however declined giving up her identity.
Her story goes thus:
” The couple, Mr and Mrs Tunde Abegunde were both from Kogi State. They met shortly after the wife, Dupe Olaniyan graduated from the Osun State College of Education, Ila Orangun, some twenty years ago, dated for few years and got married after Dupe got her first and second degrees from the University of Ilorin.
Their relationship sailed smoothly even when they both schooled in separate locations such that they were the envy of their friends and colleagues at work places.
Many years after their union, however, Dupe was unable to conceive and that became a major issue in their marriage ,” narrated Yetunde(not real name).
But while conception remained difficult for Dupe for those many years, according to Yetunde, Dupe enjoyed career progress more than her friends. ” Within the first three years of working as a marketing officer in a bank, she got double promotion that came with a posh official car and a driver,” she recalled.
With her elevation at work, she started earning three times more than her husband and this changed their way of life positively.
Within 10 years of working, she became a marketing manager,  bought a bungalow in a choiced area in Ojota, Lagos, bought her own car and changed jobs two times.
Things were not the same for her husband but Dupe was a supportive wife.
” I love my husband and as a born-again Christian, I did not see any big deal in supporting my husband financially especially when he has been rock-standing for me over my childlessness for years.
” What I am trying to say is that unlike the average Nigerian men who would have been chasing other women just to have a child( with the eagerness of his families to have one), Tunde never pestered me on the issue, instead, he suggested we go the way of an alternative birth, that was an IVF, surrogacy or adoption, He was that understanding” she had told her friend.
That was why Dupe did not think twice to buy a CRV for her husband on one of his birthdays.
” My aim was to make him feel loved and appreciated also to make him feel good among his peers since I also drive a jeep around,” she said.
But, two years ago, according to Dupe, Tunde lost his not- too- good job and it became very difficult to get another one, which affected his attitude and countenance at home. ” He became snappy and withdrawn at home and all efforts to bring him out of this valley proved abortive. I even confided in one of our pastors to help pray and talk to him but I saw no meaningful change.
” He started staying out late and coming up with the quest for money to travel out of the state for interviews. And  for peace to reign, I usually gave him because a few times that I raised an objection, he slapped me so hard that I nearly lost a tooth.”
‘ He would say a lot of hurtful words that I had never heard him say before and I kept praying for God to intervene” she said.
Some of her friends who were worried over his change of attitude advised her to keep a distance from him at all times.
But the worst was yet approaching to her. Late last year, Dupe was transferred to head one of their companies in Sango-Ota and that was taking her away from her duty post at home.
” We needed a live-in house help because I can’t be coming home everyday since I work late. We were engaging daily workers before.,” She narrated.
They were still on the look out for an househelp when Tunde came in with one that tore their home apart.
” I came in one Friday to meet a young man whom Tunde described as his junior, way back in the university. He said, he just moved to Lagos and he has offered  him a place to stay in our house for a while till we get a domestic help.
He said he would be helping in the house chores and would be a good company while I was away.
” True to Tunde’s words, Chuks, though a bit grown, had no issue cooking and keeping the home tidy, so, soon, I started paying him a token every month. Tunde became livelier again and I was happy for Chuks’ presence,” she explained further.
Unknown to Dupe, Tunde had just brought his real significant other home.
Hell was however let loose concerning this one fateful day.
” I came home early, one Friday evening and just slept carelessly in one of the rooms while packing the clothes there. I didn’t also come with the car because the driver took it for some repairs against Saturday that I would be needing it. Well, I was woken up rudely with some sound that only come from two adults having some sexual pleasures. At first, I thought I was imagining it but sooner, I knew it was a reality. I tiptoed into the living room to catch Tunde on top of another woman but I got the shock of my life. Right in front of me, at the centre of my living room   were, Tunde and Chuks, stark naked, deep in sodomy. They were backing me, so, I stood rooted to the spot I was, looking and wishing it was all a movie. The sight was not just ugly, it was disgusting. I started throwing up heavily and that caught their attention, ” narrated Dupe painfully.
” Jesus! was all Tunde could muttered.I rushed inside the bedroom, locked myself up and put a call to my best friend to come around,” Dupe said amidst tears.
” By the time my friend came, the two lovers had disappeared. When she asked me why I was crying, I only told her that I caught my husband having sex with another woman in the house. She was with me for two days. When I was leaving for Sango-Ota on Monday, I had ensured that the house was locked up with a new key.” She said.
It’s been one year and six months after and Tunde is yet to even call or come for his things. Dupe, on the other hand is yet to get acquinted with another man even when she yearns for a child.
A case of once bitten, twice shy, most likely.
