What the world must know about Nigerians, others — Institute

The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Friday enjoined people in the Global North to also recognise  possibilities in people from the Global South.

The Global South include the U.S., Canada, Europe, Isreal,  Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand, while the Global North is made up of Africa, Latin America and developing Asia, including the Middle East.

The institute’s Director, Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the developed countries must begin to recognise the potential in developing countries.

“It is first and foremost the responsibility of this institute to promote and project the positive image of Nigeria and people of other black race.

“We have been working to tell the world that we have the ability to also think creatively and also develop as much as those from developed countries.

“We are really making it clear to the world that knowledge and expertise does not from flow the Global North to the Global South,
but also flows from the Global South to the Global North,’’ he said.

Falaiye said that the institute was established to make Nigerians and the entire black race believe in themselves anywhere they found themselves in the world.

The institute’s director also advised blacks to desist from any form of inferiority complex when in foreign countries or interacting with foreigners.

Falaiye said that it was up to Nigerians and other black people to show their abilities, potential, knowledge and expertise to the rest of the world.

“We are to show to the rest of the world that we have the capacity to think, to reason and even develop as much as other people from other races.

“We strongly believe that nobody can make you inferior without your consent,’’ he said. (NAN)
