Last-minute efforts of the management of Arik Air to forestall an industrial action from aviation unions proved unsuccessful as angry workers, on Monday morning, shut down the airline’s Lagos headquarters.
Acting under the aegis of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the workers are protesting alleged non-payment of staff salaries since April, even after 90 per cent of the workforce had been placed on compulsory leave.
The workers, who defied early morning rains and took over the airline’s premises at the Local Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, are also protesting other sundry welfare issues, including unfavourable conditions of service arrangements.
