(UPDATED) PDP, LP lose again as A’Court affirms Gov. Sanwo-Olu, deputy’s re-election

Ayodele Olalere

A three man-panel of Election Petition Appeal sitting in Lagos, on Wednesday  affirmed the re-election of  Babajide Sanwo-olu and Kehinde Obafemi Hamzat, as duly elected governor and deputy governor of Lagos State respectively.

The three man panel unanimously dismissed the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic party (PDP) and it’s candidate, Olajide Adeniran, a.k.a. Jandor.

Jandor and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party contested against the incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat  in the March 11,  2023, governorship election but lost.

While Sanwo-Ollu polled 762,134, his close challenger, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, LP,  scored 312,329 votes and Jandor scored  62,449 votes.

In its ruling,  the Appeal Court  panel led by Justice Yargata Nimpar first dismissed the appeal of the PDP  for lacking in merit. It upheld the decision of the Election Petition Tribunal which had declared Sanwo-Olu has duly re-elected governor of the state.

On the Labour Party and it’s candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivor’s appeal, the court dismissed Gbadebo’s argument that Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat did not have the required qualifications to contest in the election.
