Unemployed man arraigned over alleged theft of motor parts worth N95, 000

A 30-year old applicant, Nasiru Adamu, who allegedly entered into a street and stole motor parts valued at N95, 000, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of breach of peace, stealing and unlawful possession.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah alleged the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by entering Owo Street with dangerous weapons to frighten the security men.

Unah told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 2, 2019 at 2.00 a. m. at No. 20 Owo Moriches St., Dopemu, Agege, a Lagos State suburb.

The prosecutor said that the defendant was unlawfully in possession of some motor parts, reasonably suspected to have been stolen.

“The defendant could not give a satisfactory account of the motor parts found in his possession after the security guards in the area caught him,’’ he said.

The offence contravened Sections 168, 287 and 329 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing while Section 168 prescribes six months for breach of peace.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Adetunji admitted the defendant to N20, 000 bail with one responsible surety in like sum.

Adetunji said the surety must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have his address verified by the court.

The magistrate adjourned the case until February 18, for mention. (NAN)
