UN envoy condemns slaying of Israeli woman

The United Nations’ Mideast envoy on Monday condemned the slaying of a young Israeli woman allegedly by a Palestinian near Jerusalem recently.

“I’m appalled by the horrific murder of 19-year-old Ori Ansbacher, by a Palestinian perpetrator,’’ UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov tweeted on his Twitter account.

He echoed Israel’s demand to the UN to condemn the killing.

“Such brutal acts must be condemned by all, there is no justification for violence and terror,’’ he tweeted.

Mladenov also sent his “deepest condolences” to the victim’s family.

Also, the suspect, Arafat Erfaiyeh, was remanded in custody after a short hearing at the Jerusalem Magistrate Court, where he appeared with bruises on his face.

He will appear again before a judge in February. On Sunday, Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency said that it believes Erfaiyeh carried out the killing following his questioning.

The Shin Bet said that according to the investigation, the killing was a nationalistically-motivated “terror attack.”

Ansbacher, a resident of the West Bank settlement of Tekoa, was a volunteer at a youth centre in Jerusalem.

She was killed after walking in the woods near the youth centre on Thursday. Erfaiyeh, a resident of the flashpoint city of Hebron, was arrested on Friday in Ramallah.

However, most of the details of the investigation are under a police gag order. (NAN)
