Two suspected cultists lynched by irate mob

Godwin Akor, Makurdi

Two suspected cultists from a nearby university, Friday night met their waterloo as they were going on a revenge mission to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

The Nigerian Xpress gathered that at about 8 pm, some suspected cultists who were going to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, to retaliate alleged killing of one of their members at the Benue State University, Makurdi, were lynched by irate members of the host community of the university when fighting ensued between the motorcycle riders and the deceased persons who refused to pay for the services rendered to them.

It was also learnt that while the riders and the suspected cultists were quarreling and struggling over the payment of money, the villagers were alerted and they rushed to the scene where the cultists that had some bags suspected to be containing firearms were being held by the riders.

Thereafter, an eyewitness said, the villagers forced open the bags and saw some arms which allegedly became enough evidence for them to carry out jungle justice.

Confirming the incident, the police public relations officer, Sewuese Anenegh, said the police men drafted to the area saw two corpses of suspected cultists or criminals said to have been involved in a fracas with members of the community and two pistols.

The PPRO said no arrests have been made at the time of filing this report and that investigation was ongoing.

Public relations officer of the university, Mrs. Roseline Waku, told our correspondent that the matter was between the villagers and the police as well as those allegedly lynched and maintained that there was peace within the institution.

Earlier in the week, vice chancellor of the Benue State University had told newsmen that one person was killed by a group of persons suspected to be cultists and announced restrict of movement of persons entering the university.

The two universities were recently closed down as a result of the ongoing nationwide ASUU strike.
