Two children aged five and six years old have been shot and in critical condition at a private school in northern California, United States.
The school children who were in the kindergarten class were shot around 1pm on Wednesday December 4 at a Christian private K-8 school. However, the shooter also shot himself and is also in critical condition.
According to the police, the motive behind the shooting is not yet known though there are speculations that the shooter may have targeted the school, Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Palermo, because of its religious affiliation.
However, the police said there was no prior connection between the shooter and the children affected.
“Whether or not this is a hate crime or whether or not it’s part of some sort of larger scheme at this point I don’t have enough information to provide an answer to that,”said Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea.
The wounded children are reportedly receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento area.
“I am thankful that they’re still alive, but they’ve got a long road ahead of them,” Honea said.
