Trade fair: Hawkers, artisans make brisk money in Enugu

Hawkers and artisans are making brisk money four days to the 30th Enugu International Trade Fair which begins on April 5.

A carpenter, Mr Desmond Udagu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday that he charged N250, 000 for materials and construction of a 25 square meters stand.

Udagu said that he had been working in the trade fair since last weekend and had made a lot of profit from exhibitors.

“What we are doing here is `seeing is believing’; once you do a neat job, exhibitors will patronise you because everybody wants the best.

“I have so many jobs waiting for me while some of my colleagues are still hanging around.

“What I do is that I paid for 10 square meters allocation and constructed good looking stand for sample and people are rushing to me to construct their own the way I did mine.

“The whole idea is to attract customers, at the end of the day may be by Thursday I will still sell it with some profit; I have been doing it for the past seven years and have never regretted it.

In the same vein, the head of land allocation in the chambers, Mr Leonard Ugwu said that one square meter allocation cost N4,500.

Ugwu said that exhibitors often paid from 20 to 100 square meters depending on the kind of business the exhibitor wanted to do.

He said that there was slight increase from this year’s land allocation from last year adding that a square meter this year was sold for N4,500 while last year was N4,000.

Subsequently, Mrs Nneka Eze, a food vendor said that she had been in the fair since Saturday and people had been patronising her.

Eze said that people who are trooping in to look for jobs in the fair including the youth had been patronising her adding that she would not regret participating in this year’s trade fair. (NAN)
