Rotimi Amaechi, the former Rivers State governor has told Nigerian youth that President Bola Tinubu will not leave his position as the President of the country easily unless the youth take it by force and be ready to die for it.
According to Amaechi, politicians often kill and maim in order to win votes and remain in power.
While speaking at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development held in Abuja, Amaechi said past events has shown that Nigerian politicians use all means to remain in power no matter the cry for change from the citizens.
“None of you here can defend the votes. If you have complained, complain, Nigerians have been clapping for you. The only way Ibrahim Shekarau became governor was because people lined up.”
“It happened in Ghana before the election of the last president. Two days, many of us were called to intervene. Why? Because the people were ready to die,” Amaechi told youths at the gathering.
He added: “You are talking and abusing everybody. Nobody has power and will give it to you, not even me. If you want a pastor as president, go and get one. The politician in Nigeria is there to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time
Reminiscing on how the All Progressives Congress APC won the 2015 presidential election, Amaechi said leaders of the party went the extra mile to win the election and the party was ready to defend it’s mandate thereby forcing them President Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat.
He said unless the youth adopt similar measures in elections, the current President Tinubu will not cede power to them.
