Tenant in court for allegedly giving false information

A 39-year-old tenant, Chidi Ngoka, on Wednesday appeared in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State for allegedly giving false information to the police against his landlord.

The defendant is charged with three counts of false information, malicious damage and breach of the peace.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Mameh, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on December 8, 2018, at No. 1, Fagbile St., Isheri-Osun, Lagos State.

He said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of the public peace by giving false information to the police against the complainant, Mrs. Folashade Hamzat.

He said the defendant a tenant in the house of the complainant, gave false information to the police that the complainant stole his properties worth N162, 000, kept in his balcony.

Mameh said that the properties which the defendant claimed were stolen included a gas cylinder worth N12, 000, three air conditioners worth N90, 000 and a generator set worth N60, 000.

He said that the total value of all the properties claimed to be stolen was N162, 000.

“The defendant knew that the information he gave to the police was not correct,” Mameh said.

The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant maliciously damaged some electrical fittings in the house which belonged to the complainant.

He said that the house fittings the defendant damaged were electrical distribution board worth N58, 000, 13A sockets worth N3, 600, four ceiling fittings worth N18, 000 and three ceiling rose worth N5, 000.

He said the total value of all the items damaged by the defendant was N124, 600.

Mameh said that the offences contravened Sections 82, 115 and 340 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs. M. F. Onamusi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government and must be gainfully employed.

The case was adjourned until May 6 for mention. (NAN)
