Teenager in court over alleged assault, unlawful assembly

A teenager, Idowu Yusuf, and one Fatai Ramoni, 22, who allegedly assaulted two men during an unlawful assembly, were on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Yusuf, 19, and  Ramoni are facing a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assembly, breach of the peace and assault occasioning harm.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences with 12 others still at large from  Jan. 28 to March 19 at the Dumpsite area of Wright Street in Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Olaluwoye  said that the defendants assembled themselves and were breaking bottles, shouting and scaring residents of the area.

According to her, the defendants had, in the chaos, assaulted two passersby – Messrs Oluwatoyin Morei and Julius Ramilowo – with a machete and a knife.

She submitted that the passersby sustained severe injuries on their heads and backs, and had to be rushed to a hospital.

“The duty officer of that division that night, ASP Festus Oloruntoba, led a police team to the area and arrested the defendants while the others escaped, ‘’ Olaluwoye said.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 44, 168 (d) (h), 173, 411, and 410 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that unlawful assembly attracts  one year jail term while  assault occasioning harm is punishable with three years’ imprisonment.

Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Oghere ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She directed that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of each defendant.

The case was adjourned until June 19 for mention. (NAN)
