No fewer than six alleged fake doctors were arrested by the Cross River State Task Force on Quackery and Related Violations in the Healthcare Delivery System in an exercise that also shut down 13 health facilities in the state.
According to the Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Health Matters, who is also the chairman of the taskforce, Dr. David Ushie, the suspects reportedly carried out fake surgeries on 11 patients.
He particularly noted an incident witnessed on September 7, 2022, where a team of suspicious surgeons carried out surgeries on whoever complained of any form of illness in Aladim community of Ogoja Local Government Area of the state.

Giving statistics of the alleged activities of the suspects, Ushie said: “The following discoveries came up: 10 patients were on admission in a government health centre, Aladim. Of this 10 patients, nine of the patients had 11 surgeries. Amongst the nine who had 11 surgeries, three patients had 4 ‘surgeries’ and these include hernia and appendectomy repairs.
“One patient had 2 surgeries for appendix and hernia, at least five out of all eleven surgeries were clearly recognisable as fake surgeries done by simply cutting the skin, making the patient sleep and then simply wakes up to see what looks like a surgery wound,”
