ASUU gives reasons talks with FG deadlocked again

After speculations that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may suspend their six-month-old strike, the body has given a reason why its meeting with the Federal Government of Nigeria ended in a deadlock earlier this week.

ASUU said it rejected the Federal Government’s offer because it is “miserable”.

Daily Post report said that ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday titled, ‘Why ASUU rejects government’s award of salary.

Recall that ASUU had on Tuesday met with the FG through the Prof. Nimi Briggs committee.

The statement read in part, “The major reason given by the Federal Government for the miserly offer, paucity of revenue, is not tenable.

“ASUU believes that if the leakages in the management of the country’s resources are stopped, there will be more than enough to meet the nation’s revenue and expenditure targets without borrowing and plunging the country into a debt crisis as is the case now.”

Recall that in May, 2022, it was rumoured that the body may suspend their strike following President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval of N456 billion for the universities with each of them reportedly receiving N4.6 billion each to finalise the 300o agreement with the varieties workers.

According to the official ASUU Twitter account,  the second round of the eight-week warning strike embarked upon by members of the ASUU would end on Monday.

It was gathered that the union is poised to go on an indefinite industrial action.
