A violent clash by suspected cultists has led to the death of six persons in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The fight for supremacy allegedly between two cult groups, Black Axe popularly known as Brothers Across Nigeria, BAN, and the KKK also known as Klanz has spanned two days, having started on Saturday shortly after the burial of one Ene Akabom, a former nember of the Bakassi Strike Force, and an alleged cultist in Calabar South.
An eyewitness to the fracas said: “It was at this funeral that the rival gangs had altercations which led to the resurgence of the clash.”
A member of one of the groups lost his life in the clash close to Duncan Street.
According to another witness: “As we speak, six members of the rival groups have been killed as at Monday morning at different locations in Calabar.
“A barber was shot right inside his shop on Mbukpa Road when he was attending to customers yesterday at about 7pm. This led to a stampede in the nearby popular market.
“Another was allegedly cut into pieces and carried in a sack to the victim’s compound.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the clash, adding that the police have deployed their personnel across the state capital to quell the clash and forestall spillover to other areas.
