Shehu Sani urges probe of el-Rufai’s administration over debt
A former senator representing Kaduna Central, Sen. Shehu Sani, has called on the Kaduna State Government to conduct a comprehensive probe into the tenure of former Governor Nasir el-Rufai, particularly regarding the state’s significant debt.
Recall that Governor Uba Sani recently disclosed he inherited a substantial debt totaling $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual obligations from the el-Rufai’s administration, which has posed challenges such as difficulty in paying workers’ salaries due to financial strain.
In a post on X on Monday, Sen. Sani urged the new state government to establish an independent probe panel led by a professional Accountant or Auditor.
He believed that the panel should be tasked with investigating the actions of former government officials and their associated contractors, particularly scrutinizing the handling of significant funds, including a $350 million loan, to ascertain if there were any misappropriations or thefts.

“The looting of Kaduna State cannot be remedied by revelations alone but by courageously constituting a probe panel…to account for the millions in dollars and billions in Naira that were misused or outrightly stolen,” Sani emphasised.
Governor Uba Sani had previously revealed during a town hall meeting that the substantial debt profile inherited has made it challenging to pay workers’ salaries. He stated that he inherited the debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the El-Rufai administration.
