Sanwo-Olu visits fire sites, commiserates with victims

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday visited sites of the fire disasters and described as unfortunate.

He said the three incidents are lessons learnt and warned residents to stop storing combustible materials like  generator and petroleum products on penthouses and rooftops.

He commended all responders for swiftly responding to the fire outbreaks, noting that their timely intervention forestalled what might have amounted to colossal losses. 

Sanwo-Olu also thanked the people for their support and cooperation in battling the fire.

He, however, appealed to property owners and traders to give way so that emergency responders can carry out their work effectively.

He disclosed that the buildings close to No. 43, Martins St,  would be subjected to full integrity tests.   He also said plans for the regeneration of Lagos Island have been perfected, adding that implementation will commence in 2020.

He said families that own properties on the island must be prepared to support government’s efforts on regeneration.       

“Government will soon start a conversation on how to commence.

Lagos island is dominated by buildings of over a century. Those weakened by old age will be pulled down during the regeneration. Government will also commence the construction of Oluwole phase II.

He further said  the state government will build modern market to ensure that commerce recommence at a higher scale with a better organised, modern way of transacting business. He also said the state government would embark on enumeration of traders, businesses and property owners on the Island.
