Rivers lawmakers defy court, hold plenary

.Condemn House demolition as 2 commissioners quit Fubara's govt.

There seems to be no respite yet in the crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly, as the factional lawmakers purported to be loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyeson Wike, on Thursday, December 14, held a plenary at the auditorium of the legislative quarters.
The sitting was held regardless of a substantive court order against it and the demolition of the Assembly Complex by the Sim Fubara-led administration for ‘reconstruction’.
The lawmakers held their sitting a day after the state Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, demolished the Hose of Assembly complex.

The seats of the lawmakers had on Wednesday been declared vacant by a rival faction led by Edison Ehie who sat at Rivers’ State Government’s house for abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the party on which platform  they were elected, and defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During their controversial sitting, the lawmakers passed the Rivers State House of Assembly Funds Management (Financial Autonomy)Bill, 2023 after debating on the Report of the House Committee on Public Accounts on the Bill chaired by Hon. Major Jack.

Commenting on the report of the Committee, the factional Speaker, Amaewhule, stressed that the the Bill, wiuld provide for the management of funds accruing to the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state.

He added that the law would ensure accountability and efficient utilisation of funds.

The House also passed the Rivers State Local Government Law, No. 5 of 2018 (Amendment) Bill, 2023 after a robust debate on the Report of the House Committee on Local Government which was presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Ignatius Onwuka.

They also categorically condemned the “heartless and brazen demolition of the House of Assembly complex by Governor Siminialayi Fubara, without the approval and knowledge of the House”.
The House, in a Motion sponsored by 26 Members and moved by Hon. Ofiks Kabang, member, representing Andoni Constituency in the House, drew the Federal Government’s attention, as well as the Inspector-General of Police and the international community to what they described as constant attacks by Governor Fubara on the legislature of Rivers State.

Amaewhule hinted that the House would write to the United Nations and governments of other well-known democracies on the actions of the Governor against the Legislature; stressing that no amount of harassment, intimidation and mindless attacks against the legislature would make them shy away from their constitutional duties.

Meanwhile, two of Wike’s loyalists have resigned from Fubara’s government.

Zachaus Adango, and Emeka Woke, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,  and Commissioner of Special Projects, respectively, announced their decision Thursday afternoon in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The two men were reportedly appointed commissioners at the behest of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, who is at daggers drawn with Fubara, his political godson.
Both are Wike’s loyalists and worked with him for eight years.
