Youths angered by the killing of three protectoon guards by assailants have set ablaze Gwer West Local Government Secretariat in Benue, Ter Nagi’s palace, and several other facilities.
The Benue Police Command in Benue, on Tuesday confirmed the rioting in Naka with the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, informing newsmen in Makurdi that the commissioner of police had moved to the area with other tactical teams to restore peace and order.
The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Mr Victor Ormin also confirmed the rioting to the newsmen, explaining that the incident began as a peaceful protest before it was hijacked by hoodlums.
“Yes, they burnt down the secretariat and the Ter Nagi Palace.
“Three protection guards were killed in Gyaruwa; when their bodies were brought to Naka, it sparked protest from the youth, and it was taken over by hoodlums,” he said.
The Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse, whose palace was torched, told newsmen that he was away for a medical check-up and was on his way back to Naka.
The traditional ruler said many valuables, including three vehicles and motorcycles, were burnt in his palace.
