Police officers who killed 21-year-old student arrested

Police officers in Kwara State who shot and killed a 21-year old student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Qoyum Ishola, have been arrested.

Qoyum was an ND2 student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the institution but was killed during a protest by the students last week Wednesday in Ilorin following the hike of fuel price to N897 per litre. The incident occurred in the Fate area of Ilorin.

Reacting to the sad incident on social media, the spokesperson of the Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the accused officers have been arrested and are currently in detention. He also hinted at the possibility of exhuming the deceased body for a post-mortem examination to be carried out so as to ascertain the cause of death.

‘’The policemen involved in the alleged killing are in detention now and they are being investigated. The post mortem examination of the corpse will be carried out because we were told the parent had buried him. We need to have the examination to ascertain the cause of the death. It’s key because there are conflicting narrations about his death. Expert opinion is the major evidence we all need to have justice, and this will be done. That FHQ has directed the CP to do the needful. Justice must be served. Thanks for your concern, while we pray that God grants him eternal rest. It’s a sad story,” Adejobi wrote.

While sympathising with the family of the deceased, the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, expressed the command’s sadness at the incident.

“The Kwara State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola during this painful and trying time. We deeply sympathize with the family, friends, and all those affected by this unfortunate event which occurred on 4th September 2024.
