The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the dismissal of three officers for misusing firearms.
The Force’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Thursday that the trio, Insp. Dahiru Shuaibu, Sgt. Isah Danladi and Sgt. Abdullahi Badamasi, were found guilty of unprofessional conduct when they went on escort duty to a musician in Kano.
They were caught on video repeatedly firing firearms into the air regardless of directives to the contrary.
The statement read: “In the course of their duty on April 7, 2023, at Kahutu Village, Katsina State, the officers repeatedly fired shots from their official firearms into the air despite police policy against firing in the air, standard operating procedure, and relevant force orders, and disregarding the possible risk to the crowd at the location, which included children.”
The Force spokesman further said the conduct of the dismissed officers was criminal, unprofessional and also embarrassing to the Force and the country.
Adejobi urged all supervising officers to ensure that they always tutor their men on all necessary standard operating procedures, warning all officers to ensure that they follow the extant laws in their conduct or risk necessary sanctions for breaches.
