Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a robbery operation along Olabiro Street in Ikenne, killing an armed robbery suspect.
According to the Command, the robbers numbering about seven held commuters and passerby hostage, dispossessing them of their valuables at gun point, on Monday, November 9.
A statement on Tuesday by the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated that the Ikene Police Division got information about the activities of the robbers and immediately swung into action.
The command said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), led operatives to the robbery scene where a gun battle ensued between operatives and the robbers.
While other members of the robbery gang sustained bullet wounds and fled, the deceased was gunned down.
The statement read in part, “On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes. At the end, one of the hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped with various degree of gun shot injuries.
“Recovered from the dead robber are; one cut to size locally made gun, one live cartridge and one expended cartridge. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Edward Ajogun has praised his men for their gallantry display.
“He, therefore, stated that this should be a warning signal to would be criminals, who are deluding themselves that police are not working again. He said they should have a rethink as the command will go to any length in protecting the good people of Ogun state.”
He said the CP has also directed that the fleeing members of the gang be hunted for and brought to justice within the shortest possible time.
