Police arraign 3 docked for allegedly assaulting transport workers

The police on Tuesday arraigned three men who allegedly assaulted three members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.

The police charged Taorid Mudashiru, 38; Qudus Oluwo, 35; and Timileyin Olajuwon, 26, whose addresses were not provided, with conspiracy, assault occasioning harm and breach of peace.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 1, at noon at the Kola Bus Stop, Alagbado near Lagos State.

Nwangwu said that the defendants beat up the complainants, Ahmed Bakare, Adeshina Shonowo and Abiodun Olaleye.

He said that the defendants disrupted the peace, when they attacked and incited some people against the NURTW workers, while performing their lawful duties.

The defendants, he said, used cutlasses to inflict injuries on the NURTW members on their foreheads, knees and hands.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 168, 173 and 413 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N400, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Aje-Afunwa ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until June 6 for mention. (NAN)
