PCNI distributes relief items to 36,000 IDPs in Borno
The Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNI) on Friday, said it had distributed food and relief items to 36, 000 persons, displaced by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno.
Mr Alkasim Abdulkadir, the Head of Media and Communication in the committee, in a statement in Maiduguri, disclosed that food non-food items and shelter kits were distributed to the conflict-affected persons.
He said that it was done under the March round distribution exercise.
Abdulkadir disclosed that the exercise was part of routine services to support Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in line with its mandate to protect vulnerable people in the northeast region.
“It has become imperative to provide food and non-food support to the IDPs as the burden is becoming unbearable on host communities,” he said.

PCNI also supported returning refugees from Central African Republic and IDPs who lost their houses to recent fire outbreak in Borno.
He said the committee, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), distributed relief items to displaced persons at Gajiram; Gubio, General Hospital, Moloi and other host communities in Borno.
Abdulkadir listed the items to include, cereals; grain, flour, cooking oil, seasoning, sugar, tomato paste, nets, mats, shoes, soaps, blankets, dresses, drugs and other consumables.
The PCNI official explained that 20,000 parcels of medical consumables and drugs were donated to the General Hospital, Moloi.
He added that 5, 570 shelter kits such as wood, nail, ceiling and roofing sheets were distributed to 1, 500 households affected by fire disaster at Gajiram.
Abdulkadir revealed that over 720 baskets of food and 1, 000 kits of non food items were distributed to each of the 300 returnee households from the Central African Republic.
Abdulkadir said that some 1, 670 food baskets and 8, 400 non-food items were also distributed to 1, 830 IDPs at Gubio camp in Maiduguri.
He said that the affected persons were displaced from their homes at Kala-Balge and Kukawa Local Government Areas, due to resurgent Boko Haram attacks.
Abdulkadir said that PCNI also distributed 1, 200 food baskets and 4, 710 non food items to Bamodu House; Fato Kura, Biafra, Bajauro and Bash IDPs camps.
”The exercise will continue periodically to ensure effective stabilisation of the health and nutritional needs of IDPs in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.” (NAN)
