A Bus Rapid Transport, BRT, loaded to capacity heading to Obalende, Lagos Island, was involved in an accident at Araromi bus stop, Iyana -Ipaja inward Dopemu on Friday morning, with many of the passengers injured and in critical condition.
The bus with registration number BDG 390 XR had taken-off from Iyana Ipaja BRT Bus terminal and headed to Obalende before the accident occurred and fell on its side while the BRT Bus driver was attempting to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
An Hausa pedestrian hawking plantain from a wheelbarrow reportedly dashed across the BRT corridor, causing the BRT driver to swerve suddenly and in the process lost control of the bus, climbed the road divider, falling on its side.
While no casualty was reported and some passengers escaped unhurt, many of the BRT bus passengers sustained critical injuries and had been taken to an unknown hospital.
While the bus has been moved from the accident scene by the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, efforts are being made to ensure normalcy is returned on the route.
