Osun court remands siblings over firearms possession

 

Two middle aged brothers, Teslim Awoyefa, 48, and Taoheed Awoyefa, 42, were on Monday ordered remanded in a facility of the Nigeria Correctional Centre by an Osun State Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife over alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

 

The duo is charged with conspiracy, intent to commit felony, unlawful possession of firearms, assault, threatening and breach of peace.

 

According to the Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, disclosed that the duo committed the offence on Jan.22, at about 11:00 am at Fashina Area, Ile-Ife, adding that the offence was contrary to and punishable under sections 2, 86,249(d), 355 and 517 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

 

He accused the duo of conspiring to commit felony with unlawful possession of firearms, assault occasioning harm and threatening violence.

 

Furthermore, Osanyintuyi alleged that the suspects unlawfully had unlawfully armed themselves with one locally made single barrel gun, four cartridges and one axe and threatened to kill one Mayowa Olumide by using an axe to hit him on his head, causing him injury.

 

He added that the defendants armed themselves with dangerous weapons and threatened to kill Oba Adeshina Ogunwusi and Owoniyi Olumide.

 

He explained that the accused, while armed, behaved in a manner that might have caused a breach of peace in public, causing terror, fear and panic in the area.

 

Osanyintuyi also claimed that the defendants armed themselves with dangerous weapons and chased people away from their various farmlands.

However, Mr Adebusola Adedoyin, the defence counsel, applied for the bail of the defendants in most Liberal terms, promising that his clients would not jump bail.

Magistrate Abosede Sarumi directed him to come with a written application for the bail consideration and ordered their remand in Ile-Ife Nigeria Correctional Service.

 

Thereafter, the matter was adjourned until Aug, 28, for mention.
