Osimhen apologises for breaching COVID-19 protocols

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, has apologised to Napoli after breaching COVID-19 protocols.

Napoli on Friday confirmed that the Nigerian had tested positive for coronavirus on his return to the club, after celebrating his 22nd birthday in Nigeria in December.

Napoli had fined the player two weeks wages for failing to adhere to the protocols during his birthday celebration, with online videos showing the player without protective masks in a crowded environment.

Osimhen has, however, taken to social media to apologise to the club and fans for putting himself and teammates at harm’s way.

“I am so sorry for what happened, I was wrong to go to Nigeria at this moment, even if I have many loved ones over there, including my brothers,” Osimhen wrote on Instagram.

“I was wrong to take part in the party, I didn’t understand the severity of what I was doing. I apologise to the club, the coach, the team and the fans.”

Speaking after their 4-1 win over Cagliari in Serie A, Napoli manager, Gennaro Gattuso, said Osimhen had taken responsibility for his action.

“He knows he was wrong, he apologised and now we are waiting for him. Will the club produce fines? I am a coach, I only decide the type of language I use with him. I gave him the authorisation to go to Nigeria, so I was wrong too.”
