‘We ought to hold a dialectical view towards economic development of our homeland and steadfastly stay true to our policy of long-term, sustainable, stable, and coordinated development.’ Xi Jinping China President
The spartan but strategic political standard which the communist Government of China promotes is fascinating indeed. It is also a landmark national testimony of how a ‘weak hatchling bird can be the first to fly’ and a worthwhile project style for every existing and aspiring public servant should emulate and embark upon.
It is with a high level of enthusiasm, expectations and exuberance that I grabbed the book authored by the vigorous President Xi Jinping when on 21st August 2023 it was launched alongside the Hausa language version at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center, Abuja. Other notable activities that heralded the book launch include China-Nigeria Seminar on Governance which was held at the China Cultural Center, Zone 5 Abuja.
Chief among the organisers are the China Embassy in Nigeria, State Council Information Office of China and Center For China Studies Utaku Abuja whose founder is Dr Charles Onunaiju. What prompted the translation of the book to Hausa language may not be far fetched from the fact that the Northern region in Nigeria takes the lead of the most impoverished part of the country. It also demonstrates the proper understanding that alleviating poverty in Northern Nigeria as a watershed to neighboring sub-regions and across the border to other Africa countries like Niger, Chad, etc. is a prioritised task.
The placing of this classical literary work in the hands of Nigeria reading public could not have happened at a more fortuitous and timely period of time. This prevailing era in Nigeria depicts that of perplexing, horrible if not hopeless economic catastrophe. Perhaps something more devastating than the 1960-2000 China.
But the thing that stirs glimmering hope is that if China, with their phenomenal population status can stamp their feet heavily on the ground and so resolutely rise beyond expectations to where they are today, then ours will be a walkover if we too are determined and committed to the national duty call. It will take more than writing and reading about this to get there, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with gathering information and gaining proper education.

Accumulation of quality and applicable knowledge is a basic prerequisite and solid imperative. Similarly, it will require taking active participation in the national political process by enlightened intellectuals and concerned individuals. As President Jinping said, ‘We all recognize that natural resources are not the same as economic resources, and natural advantages do not equate to economic advantages.’
The fulcrum of the government’s operational and administrative obligations is to bring benefits and improvements to the populace with each passing moments of the terms in office. As President Jinping said,’ If we can’t address the people’s problems and concerns, there is no way for us to improve the reputation of the Party and the government.
If we can’t solve people’s practical problems in production and in life, our political work will not be convincing. The indispensable role of proper governance portrayed by an iron-will gang of political juggernauts who fears nothing but selfish pursuits and inbred corruption, cannot be overemphasized. Their characters are generally marked by incorruptible disposition, knack for selflessness, unassuming stance, perseverance and sobriety of purposes, nationalistic, soundness and steadfastness.
There is no dearth of supply of this quality personalities particularly in Nigeria but the currently operational political system steadily suppresses them from coming to the limelight. It took a drastic revolutionary movement supremely organized by rare nationalists who put the salvation of their land – China above every other considerations to snatch back the nation from the hands of the fifth columnists at the time. Today, this patriotic elements are housed under the auspices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) whose membership population is barely 1 billion zeolous party faithful.
The book is a compendium of analytical guidelines of how more effective national development can be realized from zero to hero. It demonstrates a step by step trajectory upon which, if strictly complied with and not unmindful of the ascertained peculiarities to a given location or land, the delivery of desired results stands true.
As the saying goes, ‘the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step’, it seems in the book that Mr President’s first step tentatively was made at Ningde Prefecture which is located East of Fujian at the northeastern coast of Fujian Province, People’s Republic of China. It borders the provincial capital of Fuzhou to the south, Wenzhou (Zhejiang) to the north, and Nanping to the west. It was, at the time, the home of the most impoverished people in China. However something close to half a dozen decades later, Ningde is listed No.2 in China Integrated City Index 2016’s environmental ranking. This rate of rapid growth in all aspects is made feasible by the synergy of forces mobilized by Mr Xi and his team of nationalistic diehards.
Xi Jinping said, ‘Only in peace can we make a country thrive and its people prosper; turmoil will usher in disaster.

When you juxtapose this highlighted insecurity phenomenon with the trends in Nigeria, it is disgusting the levity with which our national security handlers meddles with the issue. The security challenges confronting the global community alongside other similar pandemic issues such as the eroding climate change, are as enormous as they are devastating. But each other nation who has a responsive government like China has forged ahead creating security management mechanism. The insecurity rate is therefore curtailed to the barest minimum.
Talk about the exploration of the talented young people in China. The value and esteem placed on the vibrance and vigour of the younger generation leadership module is an enviable one. The note description of a passage on the last chapter of the book struck me. It reads, ‘Adhering to the premise of revolutionalisation, it proposed taking progressive steps to ensure that all levels of leadership would become younger, better educated, and more professional.’ It further illustrates thus… ‘that the Party would make the ranks of the officials more revolutionary, younger in average, better educated and more professionally competent.
The last but obviously not the least here is a sub-heading in the last chapter of the book which reads ‘The people are the driving force in the development of human history’ concisely encapsulates what will require another entire volume to pen down. The building and making of a sound and stable nation may appear complex and critical on the periphery, but indeed it proves to be a cruise when the right leaders imbued with iron will are put on the driver’s seat. The development of Nigeria to retake her topmost position in the comity of nations in Africa and beyond, I strongly believe that it is a workable objective. It only takes you and I to make that dream come true. If we eschew ethnic bigotry, political myopism, religious fallacies, covetousness, outrageous and consuming corrupt practices; and embrace wholesome pursuit and nationalistic objectives, we will, in no time at all, reap the harvest. Bless you. God bless Nigeria.
