Son of the late legal luminary Gani Fawehinmi, Muhammed Fawehinmi has thrown his weight behind the security outfit put in place by Governors of the SOuth West geo-political zone, code-named Op. AMOTEKUN
Fawehinmi who spoke in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Lagos said Op. AMOTEKUN should be a pride to all Nigerians.
“After Awolowo, this is the first original initiative and perhaps the best that has happened to the Yoruba race. Amotekun undoubtedly will succeed but there is no leader in Yoruba land. We have elders but we don’t have leaders in Yoruba land,” he said.

Speaking further on insinuations in some quarters that the operation could threaten national unity, Fawehinmi dismissed that describing it as right step in right path. “It is not a threat to national unity, I don’t blame some people who sees it as a threat to national unity what do you expect when we have a half-baked person who perhaps have never read the constitution of the country and does not understand what the constitution is saying. Amotekun is legal. Amotekun is here to stay and I support it with every fiber of my being, my entire family support it and I expect the whole Yorubas’ to support it.”
In the same vein, former commissioner of environment in Lagos, Dr. Muiz Banire, while answering questions on Op. AMOTEKUN, told our reporter that the outfit exists everywhere in Nigeria. Likening the security operations with some government agencies Banire explained that the operation will also bring about healthy competition among different geo-political zones in the country.
“As far as I am concern, Amotekun exists everywhere. There are agencies like KAI (Kick Against Indiscipline) and Neighborhood corps, they are doing what Amotekun will do. The code name is different and as far as I am concern even the legal framework already exist. For me it will bring about healthy competition among different geo-political zones in the country,” Banire opined.
