Ogbaru LG council boss lauds Obiano, others for assisting over 11,000 IDPs
Transition Chairman, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr Arinzechukwu Awogu, has expressed gratitude to Governor Willie Obiano for his assistance in taking care of flood victims, especially the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Awogu conveyed the council’s gratitude to the governor on Sunday in Awka on Sunday.
It will be recalled that Ogbaru was one of the badly affected flood areas with all the 16 communities submerged and over 100,000 persons affected according the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The chairman, who said the flood disaster had come and gone, noted the council remained eternally grateful to Obiano and others, including the security agencies who provided relief materials and support to IDPs.
Awogu said that there were no fewer than 11,000 IDPs in the council and said that all those at the various camps had returned to their homes.
“Thankfully, the flood has receded to the river bank and the victims have all gone home and are beginning to pick up the pieces of their lives again.

“The people of Ogbaru Local Government have not forgot the care they received from the Anambra State Government which helped in cushioning the difficulties of the seven weeks that the flood tormented the people.
“We applaud the timely response to the disaster by the governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano in mobilising relief materials and food items for the 11,180 IDPs.
“These IDPs were scattered in the seven holding centres and clusters as well as hard to reach communities where the victims were taking refuge,” he said.
Awogu said he was also thankful to the Ogbaru Flood Management Committee that had been working tirelessly since Sept. 10 when the flood became uncontrollable.
He said the committee helped set up effective sickbay with two nurses and a doctor per camp who were fully operational.
“Emergencies were being attended to, mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, buckets among others were supplied and evacuation of trapped victims and rescue operations were undertaken most times under very dangerous conditions.
“In all of these, the victims were well cared for, the presence of the governor in giving necessary support to the victims was overwhelming.
“On behalf of Ogbaru people, let me commended the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, security agencies, NEMA and SEMA.
“And indeed the media, faith-based organisations, NGOs and public spirited individuals that also assisted in arresting the humanitarian challenge posed by the flood, we are eternally grateful for their help,” he said. (NAN)
