A woman said to be in her 80s reportedly died as a two-storey building on Thursday morning partially collapsed at Oloto Street, Borno Way, off Freeman Street, Oyingbo, Lagos.
The structure collapsed directly on the yet to be identified octogenarian.
Emergency responders, including men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, immediately rushed to the scene to provide assistance and manage the situation.
A cording to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, who confirmed the lone casualty, there were no other reported injuries in the incident.
He explained that an internal suspended beam within a room collapsed due to structural ageing and lack of maintenance, adding g that LASEMA received distress calls and promptly mobilised the rescue team arrived to the scene.
He said: “The Agency responded to distress calls concerning the above and, upon arrival, discovered a storey building in a state of partial collapse.
“Further information gathered at the incident scene revealed that an internal suspended beam in a room collapsed at about 7:45 am due to the ageing and lack of maintenance of the structure.
“Unfortunately, an old woman died from the impact of the partial collapse.
“The building has been cordoned off, and LABCA has been contacted for further action.”
