Obstetrician condemns rivalry among health workers

Prof. Nimi Briggs, a renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, has condemned incessant animosity among health workers in the country, describing such as unhealthy for the health sector.

Briggs made this observation while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, there is currently some animosity between some members of the health team and doctors in Nigeria to the effect that doctors could no longer be considered as leaders of the health team.

He stated that the laboratory scientist held more strongly to the view than any other, adding that they had gone to obstruct some pathologists, especially microbiologists, haemophologists among others from sharing laboratories.

Briggs said that this had led to unhealthy rivalry in some places, stressing that it was absurd for anyone not to recognise the centrality of the doctors in the health care delivery team.

“It is equally important for doctors to reflect on those issues that bring them into conflict with other members of the health team.

“Experiences show that this happens more in environments where doctors have not satisfactorily lived up to expectation as leaders but involved themselves in activities that debased them.

He called on doctors and especially specialists in the health sector to earn and regain the respect that had been traditionally been extended to them by all strata of the society. (NAN)
