Obaseki announces N70, 000 as new minimum wage for Edo workers

Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has raised the new minimum wage for workers in the state to N70,000.

The governor revealed this while commissioning the new Labour House in Edo state on Monday.

According to him, the new wage comes into effect on May 1st, 2024.

Until the announcement of the new minimum wage which came into effect on May 1, the minimum wage of civil servants working with the Edo State government was N40,000, which was the highest in the country.

Obaseki has been commended for not owing workers and pensioners even though his state pays the highest minimum wage in the country.

In December 2023, the governor even paid the state workers 13 months’ salaries in appreciation of their service to the state, according to a statement by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie. He said: “The Governor Obaseki-led administration pledged to pay 13th-month salary on Workers Day, as a gesture to appreciate the workers for their steadfastness and also ameliorate the hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.”
