OAU sex-for-marks lecturer, Prof. Akidele out of prison after 2-yr term

Convicted lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Richard Akindele, has been released from prison after serving a two-year term.

It was gathered that the Akindele, who is a Professor of Management Accounting, was released on March 19, 2020.

He is believed to be back at home with his family.

Recall that in 2018, a Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, had sentenced the lecturer to prison after he pleaded guilty to a four-count charge filed against him.

He was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for ‘attempting to have sex’ with one of his students, Ms Monica Osagie, in exchange for marks.

In an audio which went viral online, Prof. Akindele was heard demanding five rounds of sex from Osagie to award her a pass mark in a course she failed.

The judge, Maurine Onyetenu, held that it was necessary to punish the professor to serve as a deterrent to other lecturers.

Prof. Akindele, a clergyman at the Anglican Diocese of Ile-Ife, was a member of the church’s marriage committee before the scandal.
