NNL, others hail Super Falcons despite 0-1 loss

The Nigeria Nationwide League (NNL) on Tuesday hailed the impressive performance of Nigeria’s Super Falcons in spite of their 0-1 narrow loss to France, host of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Falcons narrowly lost to France through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official, who called for a penalty as well as a re-take, after the goalkeeper saved the first kick on Monday evening in Rennes, France.

Ebere Amaraizu, Director, NNL, told NAN in Enugu that the match showed a lot of improvement on the team’s tactical play.

“They did put up an impressive performance as well as a good fighting spirit in the game.

“They held the host, France, very well in the first half and the second half, until the VAR referee called about 71 minutes of the match.

“We have some positive things to take home. We are proud of the present Super Falcons in spite of their gallant loss to France,’’ Amaraizu said.

A sports fan in Enugu, Ifeanyi Okonkwo, said the Falcons had remained “good ambassadors of Nigeria’’ in France so far.

Okonkwo noted that the ladies had been able to keep their cool in spite of various controversies surrounding their last Group A match.

“Personally, I am proud of them losing in a dignifying way, while maintaining a great comportment and display of discipline,’’ he said.

Ignatius Okpara, a sports journalist, lauded the gallantry of the Super Falcons in the game.

“Our girls played with confidence and resilience even when they were one player down.

“It is a great match and we are proud of the Super Falcons,’’ Okpara noted. (NAN)
