Nigerians insist on marking #EndSARS anniversary

Pascal Oparada

Despite threats of arrests and clampdown by the police, Nigerians have insisted that they will mark the anniversary of the protest on Wednesday, October 20.

According to them, they cannot forget those who were killed on that say at Lekki Toll Gate.

They are mobilising across the country to mark the remembrance one year after the country was brought to a halt for two weeks during a protest to mark police brutality and bad governance.

“#EndSARSMemorial

People were shot, injured and killed as they waved flags & sang. To memorialise them, we’re driving through the toll tmrw.

We know them, so cars are to limit harassment. If you dont have a car, text the number. There’s space. Will be there at 8. Join if you can,” one Twitter user said.

Another said: “They will not intimidate us into silence. I’ll be sending an email to all the lawyers who volunteered last year, once you get that email please respond if you are available and can be on standby tomorrow. #EndSARSMemorial.”

The Lagos Police Command, on Tuesday, embarked on a show of force along Lekki Toll Gate as a means to deter would-be protesters.

Femi Falana asked the Police to deploy personnel to protect protesters rather than arrest them.
