The cause of the death of the 40-year-old Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who slumped and died during a boxing match at Bukom, Ghana has been revealed.
According to an autopsy carried out on his remains, the late boxer died from cardiac arrest during the match.
The incident occured when Segun was facing his Ghanian opponent, John Mbanugu and suddenly collapsed in the middle of the fight. In spite of the effort of the referee and medical professionals who rushed to the ring to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead at the scene. The sudden death prompted an autopsy to be conducted on his remains on April 2.
The Secretary-General of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and West African Boxing Union President, Remi Aboderin who announced the results of the autopsy said preliminary post-mortem results showed that that late boxer died from cardiac arrest adding that more investigations are still being carried out to ascertain the conditions of his heart especially before the bout. He said until investigation is concluded which will take two weeks, his body will.not be released for burial
Before his death, Segun was the former National and West African light-heavyweight champion. Report indicated that he decided to take part in Ghana’s bout to be able to raise funds to settle debts he was owning back home.
