Nigeria pulls out of AFCON match against Libya over delay at airport

 

 

The Nigeria Super Eagles have pulled out of Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya over delay at the airport.

Super Eagles players have been stranded Al Abraq International Airport in Libya for over 13 hours after their chartered flight which was diverted en-route Benghazi, the venue of the match was diverted to Al Abraq airport by the Libyan authority.

They were expected to travel by road from the airport to Benghazi for two hours.

However, since they arrived at the Al Abraq airport, they have not been attended to with no food, water, while the players have been sleeping on the floor of the airport.

On Monday morning, the players decided they were no longer going to honour the match with the captain Troost Ekong said they are already fatigued.

Their decision have been supported by the Nigeria Football Federation who are now arranging to fly the players back.

In a statement on Monday, the NFF detailed the frustrating situation, explaining that: “The Nigerian delegation for Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya is still at Al Abraq Airport, 12 hours after landing. The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport just as the pilot was completing his approach to Benghazi Airport,” the NFF stated.

“Players have resolved not to play the match any longer, and NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home,” the statement concluded.
