Former Postmaster-General of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bisi Adegbuyi, has expressed the need for President- elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek ways of reconciling the various tendencies in the country for its stability, progress and growth.
Such a step, according to him, is necessary if the nation must enter a new phase of stability to usher in development after the general elections.
The Ogun State born lawyer is of the conviction that, since the two other presidential candidates have opted to adopt the Tribunal option, it would be difficult to ask the President- elect to form a Government of National Unity (GNU), where the duo of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would be participants.
Adegbuyi who spoke at a media parley in Lagos Wednesday had canvassed the formation of a Government of National Unity by any of the contestants who eventually emerged victorious with a view to ensuring national stability as a result of events that preceded the elections admitting that such has been overtaken by pending court cases by the duo.
His words: “Government of National Unity is foreclosed because the opposition is not creating conditions for it. In Yorubaland, there is a saying that you don’t become friends after a protracted litigation. Arbitration and statesmanship are some of the conditions precedent for formation of GNU.”
Adegbuyi, who was the co-convener of the famous Pro-National Conference (PRONACO), reasoned that either Atiku or Obi would’ve demonstrated statesmanship by shelving the court option for reconciliation of the country and move the nation forward!
This, according to him, however requires demonstration of statesmanship.
“The foregoing notwithstanding, the President-elect still has the onerous task of healing the country and put reconciliation on the front burner.
“All should refrain from making incendiarist comments that are capable of excerbating the already tensed and charged situation.”
Adegbuyi, who is a die-hard Awoist said all alternatives means of ensuring national cohesion and stability should be pursued by the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
On the vexing issue of subsidy which has become unavoidable due to global trends, the legal practitioner cum politicians said such should be done gradually by the new government during which enduring policies that would cushion the effects of removal on the citizenry should be implemented.
The widely traveled lawyer said that has been the system by the Western countries like the United Kingdom (UK) through cash incentives directly to the less privileged and the poor in the society.
