A couple in Ogbomoso, Oyo state, on Thursday, November 28, were a few minutes away from death as a container fell on their car shortly after exiting to buy goods.
According to witnesses, the couple had parked their car Ogbomoso High School area and disembarked to buy some items when the container fell on their car while they were yet to purchase the items
“It was a narrow escape. The couple just packed their car and got down to buy some items at the side of the metal scrap yard,” said an eyewitness.
He added “That’s when the trailer had its large container fall on the car. Thank God no other person was in the car.”
Narrating how the incident occured, the witness said the driver of a bus coming in the opposite direction was busy using his mobile phone and in the process lost concentration and was heading for a collision with a trailer.
He said that the driver of the trailer with registration number Nasarawa JZ 101 ZA, in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with the bus ran into a ditch causing the container it was carrying to fell on the car.
“It was while the trailer driver tried to avoid hitting the bus that he slipped in a ditch and fell on the packed car,” the witness added.
It is recalled that during the week, a container fell on a Toyota Corolla car in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
The driver of the crushed car who was stuck for three hours in the car before the container was lifted miraculously escaped death and was rushed to the hospital.
Lagos have witnessed several cases of containers falling on cars which are usually caused by reckless driving on the part of the trailers drivers, failure to hook the container to the trailer and rickety trailers
While casualties have been reported, some have narrowly escaped such incidents.
There have been calls for government to ban conveying of containers by trailers to avoid cases of containers falling off.
