NANS calls for implementation of ASUU/FG agreements

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for sincere implementation of the agreements reached between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Mr Adeyemi Azeez, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association, made the call in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

The association called on both parties to see the 90 day-strike as the end to the avoidable strike in the Nigerian universities.

“The 90-day strike has no doubt consumed a complete semester from the academic calendar of our universities NANS calls on the Federal Government and ASUU to implement the reached agreements with utmost sincerity”, he said.

According to the association, the implementation of the agreements will put an end to strikes in the nation’s education sector.

Azeez commended the students for their commitment in the course of the struggle toward ending the strike.

“The National President of NANS, Danielson Akpan, appreciates all well meaning and intellectual Nigerian university students for their endurance and comportment, all through the just suspended ASUU strike.”

He identified such struggles as Save Education Rally, held nationwide on November 17 among series of protests across the regions of the country.

Azeez also pleaded with the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency address the ongoing ASUP strike in the nation’s polytechnics.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU declared indefinite nationwide strike November 4, 2018 at its NEC meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said that government had agreed to release N25 billion as revitalisation fund between April and May 2019, among other agreements. (NAN)
