Melee Kyari: Protests rock Abuja

Some Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, on Monday led several Nigerians, especially youths on a protest in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The protesters massed at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL towers in Abuja, demanding the resignation of Group Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mele Kyari.

Citing rising prices of fuel, unending fuel scarcity and queues, amid biting economic hardship in Nigeria, they described Kyari’s leadership as incompetent and called for his immediate resignation.

The protesters bore placards with various inscriptions, such as “we demand the immediate resignation of Kyari”, saying he had failed Nigerians as the helmsman of the NNPCL.

Addressing newsmen, the conveners, Abdullahi Bilal, called for an end to “fraudulent fuel subsidy”.

He alleged adulterated fuel was being imported into the country, saying it is inimical to the economy and must stop forthwith.

“Today, we call for the immediate resignation of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bilal said.

“We demand the complete removal of the fraudulent fuel subsidy regime that has only served to enrich a select few. Full deregulation is necessary to introduce transparency, competition and fairness to our oil sector.

“We also demand an end to the importation of adulterated fuel into Nigeria. This harmful practice must stop immediately and those responsible must be held accountable for the damage caused to our vehicles, businesses, and livelihoods.”
