An Ibadan, Oyo State based man simply identified as Saka has begged a Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan to divorce his marriage to his wife, Sadia over the allegation that the latter is a drunkard, bedwets and always beat him to a pulp.
During a hearing of the divorce suit , Saka accused his wife of irresponsibility, drunkenness and domestic violence which has left him frustrated and thus he could no longer continue living with her.
He further told the court that he gave Sadia N50, 000 to start a business, but instead she spent it on alcohol adding that whenever she gets drunk, she would bedwets and scatter their apartment.
He added that anytime he complained about her behaviours, she would lock him up in their room and beat him to a pulp, inflicting him with injuries.
He noted that on several occasions, he had reported to the police but the police directed him to come to court for divorce having gotten tired of settling their disputes.
Saka described Sadia as ‘a thorn in my flesh’ who has turned his life upside down.
Narrating how he met her, Saka said he met his wife through her sister and subsequently she moved into his wife. He admitted he has never met her parents.
“My lord, my wife is a thorn in the flesh. She has ridiculed me enough. I want her out of my house and life. I have never met her parents. I only know her sister, which was why I did not pay her bride price. She moved in with me in 2020 and turned my life upside down,” he said.
“I gave her N50, 000 to empower her. I sat her down and enlightened her on the different businesses she could go into. I felt I was relating with a reasonable and sensible person, but this was not the case. My wife to my chagrin took to drinking. She could drink a barrel of beer in a day. She spent the N50, 000 I gave her on alcohol” he lamented.
He added: “Sadia would go out without my consent and return home drunk. Our apartment and our room, especially, are filled with odour. My wife messes up our apartment whenever she’s drunk and also wets the bed. Our mattress stinks because she urinates on the bed. We quarreled over her misbehaviour on a regular basis, but she got worse rather than change.”
In her response , Sadia told the court she agreed to the divorce and accused Saka of failing to take care of her.
She told the court that her husband was only giving her N200 per day for feeding and was in the habit of locking his pot of soup in the room whenever he cooked without allowing her to eat from it.
Sadia also accused Saka of being a serial divorcee who is in the habit of sending his wives away, adding she was the seventh woman he would divorce.
Sadia responded, “My husband is a liar. He is callous and in the habit of sending his wives packing. I am the seventh wife he is throwing out of his house. I have been fending for myself since I started living with him. He gives me a mere N200 per day for food while he stocks his store with foodstuff,” she said.
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo after she had heard both parties adjourned the case for judgment.
