Like Buhari, Reps moves to establish Tinubu’s university

The House of Representatives has begun moves for a university to be established in the name of President Bola Tinubu.

It is recalled that during the tenure of immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, the then Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi proposed and ensured the establishment of University of Transportation in Daura, the homestead of Buhari.

In like manner, the House of Representatives on Thursday received a bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. The bill passed first reading.

The new bill, which was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, and eight others, is aimed at establishing a university for the promotion of the learning of Nigerian languages.

According to Section II part I of the bill, the university is to “encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring a higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures.”

The university will award diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research and higher degrees in Nigerian languages and cultures.

The Section further stated that the university will produce ‘socially mature persons with capacity to communicate, understand and use Nigerian languages for national development.”

The bill mentioned that President Tinubu will be the visitor to the university with powers to remove from office council members apart from the pro-chancellor and the vice-chancellor of the university.

The second reading of the bill will be done in the next few weeks and a public hearing will be conducted.
