Ununu Sunday Uguru, a lawyer in Ebonyi State has allegedly killed a man, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo while celebrating an election victory in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.
The victory was the election of the Izi Unuphu Power of Attorney in the community, which allows the group to be responsible for managing and recovering lands in the community considered to have been illegally acquired or sold to non-indigenes.
However, the latest incident occurred after an election was held on August 22, 2024, to elect new leaders for the group and a loyalist of Unuphu won a key position in the election.
During the group’s jubilation of the victory, the lawyer, who is the group’s counsel and joined in the celebration, fired his gun in excitement but unfortunately, a bullet hit the victim, pierced through his mouth. He was rushed to the hospital but died the following day, August 23.
The victim, who was an orphan, was said to be a key member of the group, however his distant family had allegedly been promised a sum of money as compensation.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, who confirmed the incident said Ununu has been arrested.
