The Majority leader of the Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Legislative Council, in Lagos State , Hon. Sulaimon Bolajoko, has advocated for a cleaner environment so as to prevent indiscriminate disposal of waste.

While speaking at the launching of a recycling initiative tagged, ‘SABI Recycling Project’, held at Olodi Apapa, a suburb and one of the densely populated areas of Lagos, the lawmaker said there is need to sensitise the public on the importance of waste recycling for cleaner environment and financial benefits.

He added proper disposal of waste has been a problem in the local governments but expressed happiness that the initiative would help to sanitise residents of the area on the importance of embracing recycling.

“We in Ajegunle have problems with how to dispose of our reusable items. This initiative will go a long way in telling our people that their plastic wastes can be recycle and they can make money from it rather than dumping them in the drainage system

As a government, if you want to provide good service to the people, you need to give consideration to some technical areas. As lawmakers, we would create a bill that will support this initiative and sensitise our people that even if they can not dispose of their waste, they can take them to recycling plants and earn money from it,” he said.

APC candidate for Lagos House of Assembly, Ajeromi-Ifelodun  Constituency,  2, Sabur Oluwa commended organisers  of ‘SABI Recycling Project’ for the initiative, and promised if voted, he would champion a bill on waste recycling.

“Waste is a major problem in Lagos and we have to do everything possible to make sure we have a cleaner environment. The job of the government is to create an enabling environment for initiatives like this to thrive. As an intending lawmaker, if given the opportunity to represent my constituency, I will be the champion to have Initiative like this promoted. I will take the initiative to the local community. We would encourage people to key into the initiative so that we can have a cleaner environment because the problem of waste is a universal problem,” he said.

Mr. Alexander Akhigbe, the Founder, African Cleaner Initiative and Green Sustainable Solutions, the organisers of the project said it was designed to reach out to people in Lagos suburbs and offer them opportunity to earn a living through recycling.

He commended the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, for partnering with the organisations to promote waste recycling.

He urged government to assist the organization in creating policy and enforcement of plastic recycling across the state.
