Amb. Musbau Akinyemi, the Coordinator, Street Captain, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mushin, on Monday called for radical change in waste management and disposal in Lagos State.
Akinyemi made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
According to him, there is need to consolidate on what are on ground before 2015.
”Waste management and disposal is nothing to write home about this past four years.
”Before 2015, Lagosians used to obey rules and regulations of LAWMA on waste by having refuse bins and bagging their refuse and waiting for the Private Sector Participant (PSP), operators to pick them up.

”Suddenly, all these changed when Lagosians were encouraged to drop their refuse on road median and highways for Vision-Scape to pick them up.
”There is need to correct the mistake so that Lagos will once again become a clean environment,” the said.
Akinyemi said that all those handling waste management before 2015 should be recalled.
He said that the government should intensify house to house campaign on proper waste disposal and collection.
Akinyemi said that the government should embark on enlightenment of the citizenry and enforcement of environmental laws of the state.
He said that LAWMA Street Captains should be reintroduced.
”Street captains did not exist under this outgoing administration.
”But we know ourselves and even without recognition, we have already volunteer by always telling people on proper waste handling and they have been obeying,” he said.
Akinyemi said that PSP operators needed to be empowered to enable them work at their ultimate efficiency. (NAN)
