The Lagos State chapter of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), on Monday, kicked-off its 2019/2020 Bi-annual Safety Campaign Week, with the theme ‘Employing Technology To Enhance Compliance And Safety On Roads’.
While addressing journalists at a press briefing, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Salaam noted that in line with the first cardinal focus of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Agenda, the government has deployed technology in line with world best practices to aid operations of the VIS.
According to him, this year’s event is aimed at educating the public on new mode of enforcement in the state, importance of pre-Registration Inspection, establishment of computerized Vehicle Inspection Service, (LACVIS ) Centres, education on the service of Accident Investigation Unit,among others.
Salaam added that Trend analysis of fatal road crashes between 2016 and 2018 in the country shows that 73,504 lives were lost to fatal road crashes in 3,075 cases.

The Permanent Secreyary noted that the estimated vehicle population in Nigeria as at Q2 2018, was put at 11,760,871, which amounts to 0.06% of the estimated Nigeria population of 193, 392, 517 million people.
Also Speaking, the Director, Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS in Lagos State, Gbolahan Toriola, advised motorists against patronizing touts for their vehicle documents and steps to take in change of vehicle ownership.
The VIS Safety week Campaign is expected to end on Sunday with advocacy taken to motor parks, churches, mosques and other places.
