The tax generated by the Lagos State government monthly stood at N49billion, according to the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Rabiu Olowo.
According to the Commissioner who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Keynote Speaker at the opening ceremony of the 149th Meeting of Joint Tax Board held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, on Monday, the government will continue to support the Joint Tax Board to achieve its National Mandate.
Olowo said the N49billion was over a 7,000 per cent increase from the N600million the state used to generate in 1999, adding that the state was committed to promoting social and national cohesion by providing an enabling environment for such discussion.
He further said in spite of the 2020 pandemic, the state achieved 100% Internally Generated Revenue, IGR.
He urged members of the Joint Tax Board in its deliberation to among other resolutions come up with practical solutions on yearly enactment of the financial acts.
In his speech, the Executive Chairman Lagos Internal Revenue Service, Ayodele Subair, says effort is being made to improve on tax administration and ease of doing business in the state.
He also said taxpayers must ensure it is a mandatory legal framework and that the mandate is carried out effectively and efficiently through due process, thanking the Governor for providing infrastructural and intellectual support.
Also speaking, Chairman Joint Tax Board, Muhammed Mamman, said the use of technology has become a necessity to seek for sources that would bring about enhanced responsibility and accountability in the tax system.
Executive Secretary, Joint Tax Board, Nana Obomeghie, thanked the Lagos State Government for hosting the event adding that it had continued to maintain the lead in tax administration in the country.
