Lagos man in trouble, dragged to court for defrauding, battering wife

An Ogba Lagos Magistrates Court is set to determine the fate of a 47-year-old man, who allegedly defrauded his wife of millions of Naira and also battering her.

The suspect, Lucky James, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate L.A. Owolabi of the on charges of defrauding his wife, Mrs Tega James, who claimed that he sold a fraudulent business proposal to her and also stole her money.

The couple has been married for a while but with no child yet though Tega said she was the fourth wife of the suspect.

According to her, James introduced her to an investment deal in which she would be entitled to 50 per cent monthly interest and fraudulently collected N1.6 million from her but reneged on fulfilling the 50 per cent interest rate agreement.

The complainant also alleged that James stole the sum of N70 million from her two bank accounts.

Tega added that her persistent request  for repayment resulted in her being assaulted by James, which prompted her to lodge a report to the police, leading to James’ arrest.

He is now facing a three-count charge, bordering on stealing, obtaining by fraud, and assault, offences punishable under sections 287(5)(6), 314(3), and 172 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The prosecutor, Josephine Ikhayere, said the defendant committed the offences at Ruby Close, Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in the Ajah area of the state.

However, after the charge was read to him, James pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of N3 million with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till November 3 for mention.
